If you imagine yourself making hand pressed tortillas and freshly crimped empanadas as part of a perfect meal, it is easy to think that you need a tortilla press and empanada maker…. Now, if the truth is the empanada maker and tortilla press have not been touched for the last 10 years, they’ve just been sitting in the back corner of your kitchen cupboard this may be the perfect time to get rid of those.
It’s OK to get rid of stuff you do not really use.
So, take an honest look at your life, and your stuff. If you believe that, you really, truly will make empanadas with fresh tortillas next year this could be a good time to box up those appliances or kitchen tools. Label them appropriately. And move them out to the garage so they’re ready for your move. If you really can’t imagine yourself using them anytime soon, it is OK to get rid of things! They are just taking up space and making it more difficult to store or find the kitchen appliances you want to use.
My ravioli maker is a perfect example of this. For years, I had a fancy little kitchen machine for making handmade pasta, and I had all of the attachments just in case I found myself wanting to mince up meat and vegetables to make my own homemade raviolis. For years, I imagined this was something I actually would do and as life got busier and busier, (and I can easily find very nice raviolis at the grocery store for less than ten dollars now) I realize that I was never going to take the time to find all the parts to the pasta maker, and actually make homemade pasta. Being part Italian, this appliance was very hard for me to get rid of; but honestly, I have never once wished I had it back, and I don’t even think I’ve thought of it until this moment.
If there are extra mixers, salad, spinners, food, processors, or any other special kitchen appliances, that you really don’t use, this is a great time to donate those all and free up space in your kitchen cupboards.
As you’re pulling out appliances to get rid of, make sure to pay attention and if they’re missing parts or not working right just throw those away. Make sure that your donations have all of the needed parts.
