Minimize your dishes when preparing to sell your house

Whatever dishes you love and use and have space to store are great dishes to keep!      (other dishes can be minimized!)

If you’re planning to sell your house and move soon, it’s good to go through the cupboards before your home hits the market. It’s easiest to weed out the dishes when the sink is FULL of dirty dishes – because that way you know your very favorite dishes are dirty in the sink so whatever is left in the cupboard are not your favorites.

throw it away

I think it is easiest to just look at one shelf or drawer at a time.  From that one shelf, be brutally honest with yourself.   Throw away things that are cracked, melted, broken, or gross

and then really ask yourself how many dishes do you need, and use on a regular basis.  If you live alone and never entertain, there’s no point to having service for 20 in the cupboard with an additional China set stored elsewhere – just keep the dishes that you really use.

Give away

Now, if you have a family of 10 and all sorts of friends and relatives that live in town and they come over for Sunday dinner every single week you may be frequently using that entire set of 20 along with the China on special occasions and that’s wonderful.

Keep what you need.

Keep what you use …

just get rid of random duplicates or ugly things that you don’t like.

Joy is in usIf you were given dishes you do not like as a gift it’s OK to get rid of them.

You may choose to send photos of the dishes with another thank you note, before giving them away.  You can always look back at the picture and remember the gift with love.

If you inherited dishes that you don’t like that still have sentimental value it can be really hard to get rid of those. If you absolutely love them, there’s nothing wrong with keeping them. But if they’re ugly and they’re just taking up space it’s also OK to get rid of them. You may take a picture of a beautiful table setting using those dishes and type up a little note to go with it of the story behind the dishes, your memories of the person who gave you the dishes or special meals eaten on those dishes. You can keep the memories.

You can still treasure your loved one without holding onto dishes you don’t like.

You may find another friend or relative who really wanted those dishes to pass them on to.  Even if nobody else wants the heirlooms, it’s still OK to get rid of them.

life I WANT to live

To fully live life in the present, getting rid of excess things that you don’t like frees space for you to be able to enjoy the stuff that you do love. The more and more stuff you get rid of the less hectic and overwhelming and cluttered your house will feel, and the more you can begin to feel a sense of calm and your home can become a relaxing, peaceful place to LIVE.
